East Tennessee and the Civil War
Published in Hardcover by Overmountain Press (01 January, 1995)
Author: Oliver P. Temple
Average review score:

More Than Just Tennessee!
Oliver Temple's book is a must-read for anyone who would understand the causes of the war and the nuances of the issues of abolition and secession (Chaps. 8 and 9). Written by a contemporary of those events (published in 1899), it provides invaluable insight into the "feelings" of the participants on these issues; insight that is usually lost in the passage of time. Temple's discussion of secession in Chap. 9 is particularly valuable in refuting the argument in defense of legal secession. A personal letter from Robert E. Lee to his son in January of 1861, denouncing secession was particularly enlightening.

East Tennessee Cantilever Barns
This book is an excellent source of information about the cantilever barns and some of the people to built them. I am a decendent of John Trotter, whose family built several of the barns. I visited Sevierville yesterday and was able to follow the map and see the barns myself. I didn't know about any of this until I ran across your book in a local store. Thank you very much. Stephanie

East Toward Dawn: A Woman's Solo Journey Around the World (Adventura Travel Series)
Published in Paperback by Seal Press (May, 2002)
Author: Nan Watkins
Average review score:

Two Journeys
I found this a fascinating book on two levels. The journey around the world visiting and sometimes traveling with friends was an absorbing story in itself. But the inner journey-the "solo" journey- was a moving and uplifting experience. Everyone has those special birthdays-30, 40, and in the author's case, 60, when one tends to take stock of one's life. The trip was a chance to both see a part of the world we rarely get to see as well as to look back with the author at the process of becoming the person who is taking this trip. I believe a great many people will enjoy taking these journies with Ms Watkins.

East wind : the story of Maria Zeitner Linke
Published in Unknown Binding by Lion Publishing ()
Author: Maria Zeitner Linke
Average review score:

Maria was a brave and courageous lady, and a great friend.
As a young boy, I had the privilege of knowing Maria Linke as a neighbor of her sister when she lived in the small town of Emlenton, Pennsylvania. She was an amazing woman. She shared her personal war time experiences with friends, neighbors, church groups and all who wanted to know the truth of wars devastating toll on humanity. Her book details the events of her life as a prisoner of the Russians during the war. It is a story of immense faith. After reading the book, you will wish that you had an opportunity to know her and her family first hand.

East Wind, Rain
Published in Hardcover by Scribner (February, 1977)
Author: N. Richard Nash
Average review score:

On Infamy's Eve
What was it like? What was it really like in Hawaii prior to December 7, 1941? In the context of this novel, certainly not dull, with tensions between the Japanese and American communities increasingly manifest. The plot centers mainly around Joanne, a navy widow; Ben, her navy officer son; Thad, her antagonistic son-in-law, also high in the naval echelon; and the shadowy, tradition-bound Japanese father, whose daughter is having a clandestine affair with Ben. The reader's interest in the story is immediately engaged with Joanne's grimey participation in a boar hunt, and the ensuing luau, from which Ben is lured, and--on the dishonored father's orders--emasculated. Seeking revenge for her son's tragedy, she and Thad set out in pursuit of the father, who retreats to a jungle refuge on an outlying island, leading his pursuers across a variety of fascinating landscapes. And then...(well, read it yourself). Playwrite Nash ("Rain-Maker") handles this character-driven plot deftly. The prose crackles with energy; no sodden, overblown, or cliche-ridden lines here. I first read this paperback edition over 20 years ago and was impressed by Nash's skillful use of imagery, giving one the sense of actually "being there". In this genre, East Wind, Rain compares favorably(albeit on a lesser scale) with James Jones'"From Here to Eternity", and, in my view, ouclasses Frank DeFord's "Love and Infamy". Although out of print for years, this forgotten jewel is obtainable through used book stores on-line. Do yourself a favor and get it!

Great resource

People familiar with Early China will feel right at home with this material; people who are new to East Asian archeoastronomy will find a gold mine of information extremely well documented and explained.

You can't ask for much better than this kind of work.

This is a good book
I used to have this book and lost it somehow. It's a really good book for doing some basic yoga exercises and getting toned up a bit before you face aerobics or other challenges.

Good yoga breathing techniques.

Each exercise is well documented with large photos and description.

East/West, an Ambiguous State of Being: The Construction and Representation of Egyptian Cultural Identity in Egyptian Film (Intercultural Studies, Vol 4)
Published in Hardcover by Peter Lang Publishing (December, 1995)
Author: Hind Rassam Culhane
Average review score:

A brilliant work by a brilliant woman!
Yes, the author is my beloved mother, with whom I am travelling to Egypt this December to create a documentary on the Footsteps of Jesus, retracing his childhood voyage to the valley of the Nile. John Culhane, my father (author of "Fantasia 2000: Visions of Hope" and "Disney's Aladdin: The Making of an Animated Film") is going too, and is writing the script (Rebecca Blackwell of City-TV is the producer). Hind Rassam Culhane is a powerful, inspiring, mesmerizingly brilliant woman who taught me not only to "honor and cherish thy mother" but to respect and work cooperatively and engagingly with all women and indeed all human beings. Her work is informed by and is a powerful complement to that of her friend, Edward Said (Orientalism, Culture and Imperialism) and taught me to understand the "othering" process and find ways to fight against it. When I was just a tiny tot she was an administrator and teacher in the newly formed "Headstart" program in inner-city Chicago; later she did the same work in Mt. Vernon New York before taking a post as an adminitrator and psychology professor at Long Island University's Mercy College Branch in Westchester, New York. It was her inspiration that led me to become an inner-city teacher for 8 years (in the 'hood in L.A., after teaching the 'fellahin' (peasants) for a year in the Dept. of Public Service in Cairo, Egypt). As a product of the East (Hind Rassam) and the West (John Culhane) I have lived the ambiguous state of being she talks about in her book, and it has helped me identify with people from many cultures. I thank her for giving me my multi-cultural perspective. It will make me a much better Urban Planner and Regional and International Sustainable Development Specialist! I think her work can similarly help others see through the lenses of our different cultures, which are increasingly the lenses of film cameras, who and why we are what we are. Fascinating reading!

Eastern Deciduous Forest, Second Edition: Ecology and Wildlife Conservation
Published in Paperback by Univ of Minnesota Pr (Trd) (05 June, 2000)
Author: Richard H. Yahner
Average review score:

Very informative , good overview of all ecological processes
This book is a must for anyone who is considering naural resource management as a career, as I am. It deals with the basic ecological terms and poses some very difficult problems that forest management will occure in the recent future. If you are interested in conservation, and not preservation, this book will be a wise investment.
